23-07-2007 - BVA Statement on Foot and Mouth Disease The BVA is very concerned by the news that FMD is again in Great Britain. Because of the highly contagious nature of this disease it is essential that efforts remain focussed on the early identification of infected animals and the prevention of further spread of the disease now that that the likely source of infection has been localised.

It is important to stress that all susceptible animal owners in GB should remain vigilant and report any clinical signs of disease whilst continuing to observe the strict ban on animal movements. The veterinary profession is standing by to offer advice on clinical signs and bio security measures to concerned animal owners, be they farmers, small holders or owners of just one or two pet farm animals.

The extent of the outbreak is not yet clearly known. We acknowledge the response and commitment by the Animal Health teams working in the field and BVA continues to work closely with Defra and our specialist divisions to ensure that all possible containment measures are considered and taken.
