Use of anthelmintics in tortoises
THE Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD
) has been receiving
a number of inquiries about the availability of anthelmintic
products, such as fenbendazole, for use in tortoises.
The VMD says that, although there are no products specifically authorised for the control of nematodes in tortoises in the UK, terrarium animals are included in the Small Animal Exemption Scheme. This means that the use of any substance approved by the VMD in the manufacture of anthelmintics for these species is permitted under the scheme.
A list of active substances approved for use in tortoises is published on the VMD's website at www.vmd.gov.uk/industry/saes/approved_actives.htm
